Romantic Cliches they exist for a reason

Romantic Cliches - they exist for a reason
by Maricruz Tennill

Though of course its true that not everybody likes chocolate (and its certainly not a good idea to buy it for someone on a strict diet), as a romantic gesture, presenting someone with a box of chocolates generally takes a lot of beating. It works particularly well, of course, if its just a spur of the moment gift, and not the result of a birthday, anniversary or apology. These days, you can even make your cliched chocolates more personal to the recipient companies like Thorntons offer services where you can add photographs to boxes, or even write messages in icing on your chocolates.

Another classic romantic cliche is the gift of a dozen red roses. It may sound corny, but youd be hard pushed to find someone that wouldnt appreciate such an elaborate bouquet. And, if you fancy changing things up a little bit, why not go for a more exotic arrangement, such as something with orchids or flowering kale? Whatever the associations, flowers ultimately let someone know that youre thinking about them and want to spoil them a little. If you live in a city, there are undoubtedly florists wherever you turn: Interflora, for example, sells flowers in Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol and, of course, lots of other cities that dont begin with B!

A cliche that gets used repeatedly in romantic comedies and dramas is that of one partner standing up for the other in a tricky situation. Now, this is certainly not to say that everyone should rush off to start a fight with their partners disagreeable landlord, but it is worth noting that taking your loved ones side in even the smallest of battles can be a romantic gesture in itself. In the end, youre showing that you trust your partner and that you believe they deserve more than their given lot. It neednt be a fight to the death just show that you care.

So yes, romantic cliches can be tacky and badly contrived in films and on television, but thats not to say you cant make them work for you. Take an age old tradition and make it your own ? youd be surprised at what it can do for your relationship.
