9 Ways To Improve Communication With Your Partner

It takes two to tango – everyone knows that. So why do we insist on not acknowledging that when it comes to communication? Without talking about things there is no way we can reach a middle ground on any issue, yet many couples are afraid to communicate with each other for fear of “damaging” their relationship.

Dating

Here’s how you can improve your communication as a couple.

1. Listen
Most people listen with the intent to respond. You need to learn how to listen with the intent to listen. It’s a skill many people have no mastered. If you’re already thinking of a reply while someone else is talking, you’re not really listening to what they are saying, so learn to put aside your thoughts for a few moments while you actually consider what it is they are saying, and what they mean by it.

2. Put aside your opinions
When listening to someone’s point of view during a heated conversation, it’s hear what they say but not really absorb it as we’re so caught up in our own opinion. What you end up hearing is what you “want” to hear, and is not necessarily what they actually said. Tackle this by absorbing what was said, and possibly repeating it to them, to make sure your understanding of what they said is not clouded by your own opinion.

3. Be honest
A strong relationship requires honesty, and it is a key factor in developing strong communication channels. It may be uncomfortable to reveal the darkest parts of yourself to someone else, but it allows you to move forward as a couple, on the same page.

9 Ways To Improve Communication With Your Partner

4. Non-verbal clues are important too
The more you get to know each other, the better you will recognize the non-verbal clues you give off. Learn to recognize what actions like lack of eye contact or folded arms means, and you will be able to pick up on the sub-text of the conversation much better.

5. Stay focused
Don’t bring older issues into a conversation that has nothing to do about them. When you sit down to talk about something, try and keep all conversation centered on it. This is not the time to bring in the fact that your husband has never picked up his towels off the floor – unless that’s what you’re discussing to begin with. Otherwise you’ll keep going in circles and end up frustrated with the lack of progress in reaching a resolution.

6. Try to keep emotion out of it
It’s easy to get emotional when talking about life-altering decisions, but once one partner gets emotional, the other one will too. And emotional people cannot make rational decisions. Try and keep emotions out of difficult conversations by focusing on the facts.

7. Be willing to back off
There are times when you will not agree on something. Instead of forcing one person to admit they were “wrong”, sometimes it is better to value the relationship more than a “win” and just back off. You will not agree on everything, and it is better not to force some issues.

Communication is about more than just talking. When communicating, both parties need to be aware of each other’s feelings and try and listen to what is being said before responding. Try and get on the same page with open communication and you will see your relationship thrive.

Communication and Money The Importance of Keeping Her Trust

When Connie got home from work, she was already exhausted from a long day of meetings. She’d left the high-pressure world of event planning sales behind to get into nonprofit work.
She loved the challenge of raising money for her charity, and her job as a development director allowed her to leverage some of her former business relationships into new donors.
On this particular day, though, her executive director was worried about finances and had really called her on the carpet, even though she was already 22% over budget for the current fiscal year.
My Banner
It didn’t help matters when she got home and opened a letter from the Internal Revenue Service, addressed to her and her husband Bob. When she opened it, she was shocked to see that they owed the IRS more than $7,000 in back taxes.
Bob did some freelance writing work in addition to his job as a teacher, and it looked like he hadn’t been making payments on his freelance income. And he certainly hadn’t told her about this.
She slammed the letter down on the kitchen island, punched his number into her cell phone, and tore into him when he answered the phone.
Why was Connie so mad? $7,000 is a lot of money, but it’s not the end of the world. Bob had also been taking out payday loans and other short-term credit lately, and instead of telling Connie that he was short with his side of their bills, he had just been making poor financial decisions that was costing them a lot in interest.
cd980-relationship-advice-6
The worst part for Connie, though, was that Bob hadn’t told her anything.
Bob’s excuse was that he didn’t want Connie to worry. She was a cancer survivor — had been cancer-free for almost seven years by that point — but her cancer had cost her her thyroid, and she had developed epilepsy as a side effect of the radiation treatment that her oncologist had used on a small tumor in her skull.
So Connie was often exhausted at the end of the work week, spending some of her Saturdays and Sundays in bed just to get ready for the next week. Bob felt guilty about this and wanted to let her think he could handle things on his own.
Of course, he couldn’t, and he was digging a bigger and bigger financial hole for himself — and for her, since their taxes were filed jointly. Now there was a huge hole in the middle of their relationship, created by the simple fact that he couldn’t be trusted about money.
What should Bob have done instead? The problem with their finances began about a year and a half ago, when his health insurance (which also covered her) went up by 22 percent.
My Banner
She also had dropped back from full time to part time work because of some fatigue and stress from her former job. He felt like he needed to do everything himself, but he simply couldn’t.
He should have told her about the problem and perhaps could have gone to family members for some short-term help. The bottom line: Connie was getting the message that he didn’t trust her as a partner, and she felt a complete lack of financial security as a result. She also felt like their relationship was worthless without that trust.
Now, Bob and Connie sit down weekly and talk about the upcoming week in finances as well as longer-term strategies. It’s not always comfortable for either one of them, but they no longer have trust issues with money.
Bob even decided to look for a corporate job at the end of the school year to boost his income, and he wouldn’t have had the confidence to do that without talking to Connie.
So the crisis turned into a win-win for them. If you and your loved one are in a similar mess, trusting each other with the truth is the best way to begin a new path for your relationship.

If you are in pain and confused?

Here’s some good news…
Did you know that most relationships CAN be salvaged? You may find it difficult to believe that almost every break up for whatever reason…infidelity, plain old lost passion, loss of interest, a stolen heart and worse…even the worst situations you can imagine…like men serving prison sentences have salvaged their relationships. Yes, even Ex-cons have got back together with girlfriends and wives after being away for years!

There is hope…

Now I can almost see you shaking your head in disbelief…
And it’s okay…let me ask?
Don’t you know couples that have gotten back together? A girl that has taken a guy back?…or vice versa?
I bet you do…and here’s the strange real clincher…
Do you remember why they broke up in the first place? I bet you know at least one guy or gal that took their lover back after an affair…or unfaithfulness…or worse even?
Think about it for a sec…
Sure! And I bet you know of…or have heard of at least one girl that has taken a guy back that REALLY should not have…you know the ones I am talking about…(and I know this is kind of dark)… the girls or guys that are in verbally or physically abusive relationships.
Now, that is some really dark stuff and I am not recommending to anyone to take someone back if the relationship was abusive…I am using it as a point that almost NO SITUATION is unsalvageable…

“Couples reunite every day REGARDLESS of the situation!”

Seriously, Doesn’t that make sense? That if most of us can think of couples that have gotten back together…under even some horrible circumstances…that there could be somehidden recipe, or secret even, to reigniting passion and recapturing lost love?
Now…I am not saying they were holding some “secret love spell” book and doing weird chants…not at all…at the same time somehow, by MOSTLY accident they said and did the RIGHT THINGS at the RIGHT TIME…and won back the heart of their lover…or at least created the circumstances where their ex gave them a second chance.
Allow me to repeat…they did this by mostly ACCIDENT!
Imagine…
What if? What they said…and what they did…could be “bottled” so to speak? And then you could “unbottle” it and put it to use? To erase old hurts…to reignite passion again…to turn back to a time when your relationship was fresh, new and exciting.

Yes…A Magic Love Recipe…in a sense…

You see there IS a “recipe for love” as well as a recipe for winning back and keeping some ones interest, desire, passion, heart and love…
What they did by “accident” can be repeated over and over on PURPOSE!
And you know what?
If I were you…I would be somewhat skeptical right now…that’s totally fine! I am going to show you some concrete proof. Just bear with me okay?

Do you have these symptoms?

-Leaving the radio off because every song makes you cry
-Loss of appetite
-Binge eating for comfort
-Calling your ex several times a day
-Text messaging and emailing constantly (Text Message Terrorism)
-Constantly checking your email and voice mail to see if he/she called
-Not going out because you are afraid to miss a call
-Thinking non-stop about why they REALLY left you
-Feeling massively depressed
-Feeling urges to spy on them
-Endlessly rehearsing what you should have said
-Endlessly rehearsing what you will say if you bump into them
…and when you do get a hold of them, it usually turns ugly because without a clear plan of what you are supposed to do…what happens? P-A-N-I-C…defensiveness…arguments…and then it gets really nasty.

Do you make these mistakes with your ex?

-We try to convince them we are the love of their life
-We will apologize profusely for everything
-Promise to change for good this time
-Try to get them to see that it wasn’t really our fault
-Even beg with them to take us back
…and of course with every word we utter, regardless of our intention, the more and more defensive, angry and distant they become.
Please know…this is not your fault! You weren’t taught this in school. You probably weren’t taught this by your parents…and there is no “get your ex back” night school…
Yeah?
And it is really a shame too because what could be more important than love?..Cars?…Money?…Clothes?…ALGEBRA?
So why? Are there all kinds of books, magazines and help on fixing a car, managing money and all the latest fashions, yet very little USEFUL information on how to fix a broken relationship…manage your emotions or getting the love of your life back?

Many Layers of Couple Communication

Sometimes the hardest things facing couples stems from what should be the simplest things for them. Thriving relationships have one thing in common, good communication. Hurdles to talking with one another come in several forms. Some partners point to their childhood where they were not given the tools to communicate effectively. Others develop patterns where they deflect certain levels of conversation as a way to protect themselves. Being able to connect conversationally on several depths provide a variety of topics and reveal more about one another.

Light Level

In this area, couples talk about all the fun stuff. They joke with each other. They share things like their favorite movies, the songs they dance around to when no one is watching and the best Thai food they have ever eaten. All of these things sound like the frivolous flotsam and jetsam easily ignored. Does it really matter that someone danced to the twist at their fourth birthday? We all need fun. We all need safe topics. Without them, going any further becomes almost impossible because who wants to share the pain of their parents divorce if they cant confess how formative the Mad Max series of movies are.

Dating

It is also easy at the beginning of a relationship, but these fun items keep a relationship exciting. Going out for a private dinner where guessing their new favorite song pulses vitality into the relationship of an established couple. By putting aside serious topics for a short time, people can reengage with the partner they met.

Little Deeper

This moderate level of communication allows partners to open up about their thoughts on more serious issues, their personal history and feelings they might have. Saying they like a movie or song is one thing, but explaining the reason for the love gives a clearer picture of them as a person. Also, hearing a partner plays a certain song when they feel isolated provides a clue for when the music is blaring on a random night.

Always Makes Me Smile
Many Layers of Couple Communication

These item usually have to be said a couple of times. They may even need to be rephrased because people generally, even when told directly, fail correlate these items. Being aware of this challenge permits couples to extend a bit of patience to one another. The longer they are together the clearer the patterns may become. They can also gently remind the other of something they have said previously because of their history.

Way Deep

This level of communication, typically, is the most challenging. The areas of discussion reveal the most hidden things about a partner including their fears, embarrassments and ways they have been hurt the deepest. Deep truths exposed too early either demonstrate a lack of understanding of their gravity or poor communication training. These things are parsed out over time and are sometimes seen best from the outside.

While this level can be quite messy, it is also where deep love resides. Couples with long history where they have heard all the silly stories and revel in knowing why those stories matter are able to profess deep love for one another. This love, this bedrock, will stand when nothing else will. A couple talking on this level will be able to face the challenge of the future as a forged unit.

While all these areas exist, using them all is critical. Staying in one exclusively damages the relationship because either no deeper knowledge of one another flourishes or seriousness chokes out all the fun. Find safe times to have a variety of conversations because they reveal all the beautiful facets of every relationship.

3 Ways to Improve Communication In A Relationship

Good communication is one of the cornerstones that make up a strong relationship. On the other hand poor communication can lead to a relationship breakdown as partners may find it difficult to ever trust each other.

Dating

Not everyone is good at communicating. If you happen to be one of these people, you may find it harder to start and maintain a stable relationship. Good communication skills can also help transform a shaky relationship into a functioning, healthy relationship.

Simple tips and basic communication skills can help you become a good communicator. The following are 3 ways to improve communication and maintain a good relationship.

Always express yourself freely

To have a good relationship, you must be free with your partner. Being free means you can share anything with him. You can share all the things that bother you, amaze you, please or surprise you. Youll find its very difficult to maintain a strong relationship with someone you cannot talk to freely.

When you learn to express yourself freely, you will never feel the need to hide something from that person and your partner will also feel more free to share his problems with you.

When you are angry, you should definitely tell him what is making you angry and this will make your partner respect you and your opinion simply because you express yourself freely.

When expressing yourself, remember to say exactly what you mean and feel about something don’t beat around the bush. Be honest and go straight to the point.

Be a good listener

A good communicator is a good listener as well. Just like you want your partner to listen to your thoughts and feelings, be sure to give that person your full attention when the time comes for you to listen.

Improve communication

Men are considered poor listeners in most relationships but this does not mean that they don’t listen at all. To get someone to really listen to you, you may need to find the right time to start a conversation.

Don’t try to force your partner to listen to you when hes watching his favorite movie or something on ESPN, because he may end up paying more attention to the TV than to you.

By listening to your partner you are giving him a chance to open up and seek solace from you. The last thing you want to do to your partner is ignore him when hes trying to talk to you.

Build a strong foundation

Without a strong foundation, even the best communicators find it hard to build a close relationship. Strong foundations are based on a number of different things: the way you treat each other, the level of intimacy you share, how well you understand each other and how the two of you manage your relationship problems.

For you to have a strong relationship you must know what makes your partner angry and what makes him happy and how to avoid deliberately aggravating him.

Remember no relationship is complete without intimacy, so its important that you always create some time for intimacy. Try to strike a balance that takes into account both of your schedules.

Remember that intimacy doesnt always mean sex. Sometimes its just as important to spend time snuggling together while watching a movie.

Lastly, dont forget non-verbal communication can be just as important and impacting as the spoken word. You can often communicate just as effectively with a stroke of his face with your hand or a strong, warm embrace.

Common Relationship Issues and How To Fix Them

Rarely do couples ever avoid their fair share of bumps in the road during their relationship journey. If you can identify what specific relationship issues may be headed your way ahead of time, you will gain a greater chance of avoiding them altogether.

Successful couples have effectively learned how to deal with the inevitable ups and downs that every relationship goes through. In other words, they know how to keep their love life alive.

Dating

When the going gets tough, they dont give up. Theyve figured out how to tackle both big and small problems along with how to handle complex issues certain days present.

Many simply learn from trial and error, watching other loving couples, attending counseling and seminars, or reading self-improvement articles and books.

Relationship Issue #1: Poor Communication

Seemingly, all relationship issues derive from poor communication skills on some level. Its impossible to communicate with your partner if you are reading the paper, watching television, or checking your smartphone.

Strategies for Poor Communication

- If you and your partner find it difficult to talk about certain issues without your voices rising, go to a public place together to talk such as a park, coffee shop, or library. Neither of you will yell in public due to embarrassing yourselves - right?

- Establish some boundaries. Try not to interrupt your partner while they are speaking. Also, try to avoid using accusatory phrases such as "you never" or "you always".

- Use your body language to illustrate youre paying attention. Refrain from checking your phone, biting your nails, and not looking the other person in the eye while theyre talking.

Common Relationship Issues and How To Fix Them

Occasionally nod so your partner knows they have your full attention and youre listening to what theyre saying.

Reiterate some of their words if you like. By repeating back their exact sentence, it shows youre not only listening, but you understand them as well.

Relationship Issue #2: Problems in the Bedroom

Even deeply caring couples who truly love one another can be sexually mismatched. In addition to finding themselves on different carnal planes, these problems get even worse when they are coupled with a lack of education and sexual self-awareness.

However, couples should never simply throw in the towel when it comes to sexual intimacy. Sex has the capability to bring couples closer together while releasing certain hormones that support the body both mentally and physically along with keeping the lovers chemistry in good health.

Strategies for Problems in the Bedroom

- Arrange intimate sexual time for you and your partner. If you have to, mark it on a calendar and make an appointment. Yes - its that important.

Couples with children should elicit the help of family and friends to watch the kids every other weekend. When theres a sex date scheduled on the calendar, its exciting since it builds the anticipation factor.

Also, changing things up in the bedroom can make it a bit more stimulating and fun. Find other places to have sex besides the bedroom - perhaps the laundry room or the hallway? The more unusual, the better.

- Both you and your partner could create a sex list. Make a list of everything that turns you on, or could potentially turn you on. Then exchange lists with your partner to create interesting scenarios that both of you can experience and enjoy.

- Employ the help of an experienced sex therapist if you are having a difficult time mending your sexual relationship issues.

How to Rebuild Trust in a Relationship

Trust is like a mirror, you can fix it if it’s broken but you will still see the cracks in the reflection. Seeing past those cracks requires a lot of effort from both parties involved. Here are a few tips to help rebuild trust after instances of infidelity or when picking up the pieces after a divorce.

book making up How To Get Your Ex Back

Grieve.
When someone betrays you, you go through the five stages of grief, these are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally, acceptance. Don’t try to fight any of these stages and don’t let any of them consume you. Believing that each stage will come to pass is what will keep you from doing something foolish. If you feel that you are not able to handle any of the stages of grief then seek professional help.

Commitment.
Before efforts to rebuild trust in a relationship are undertaken, both parties must be committed to rebuilding the trust in the relationship. Trust is a two way street, you are either both in or not. Rebuilding trust is not an easy feat, it takes real effort from both parties and will only be successful if you are both fully committed to making it work.

How to Rebuild Trust in a Relationship

Be an open book.
Trust is earned; earning it back after losing it in the first place means can only happen if you are open. Do not give your partner any reason to doubt you. Do not use cryptic language to explain what you were doing, where you are going or whom you were with. Most importantly, expect the same from your spouse. Share passwords, explain yourself in detail and always be accountable for everything you do or say. This way there will be no gray areas in your relationship and you will have no reason to doubt each other.

Put in the time and effort.
If you are the betrayer, you need to first give your spouse the time and space to vent. This may involve some furniture throwing, hurling of insults or passive aggressive action. Whatever they do, take it because you probably deserve it. Next, you need to find out what your partner needs. Is it some level of reassurance, closure or explanation? Find out whatever it is you need to do to make things better. Basically, you need to be consistently available for your partner to respond, comfort and reassure them. If you are the victim, you need to accept what has happened and not wallow in self-pity or over indulge in playing the victim. Consciously choose to look for a solution rather than finding ways to torment yourself and others.

Knowing when to quit.
The most important thing about rebuilding trust in a relationship is trusting yourself and knowing when to abandon ship. This type of decision can only be made when you trust yourself first. Trusting your judgment means knowing your limits and how much you can take before throwing in the tools and moving on with your life.

Broken trust does not necessarily have to result in a divorce or breakup. It is possible to build a stronger and more trusting relationship if both parties are committed to making their relationship work.

Dating Someone With An Addiction

Sadly, a significant portion of the world’s population has an addiction of sorts. This can be various drugs or alcohol. It can even be something that’s not a chemical, such as a sexual or gambling addiction. There are many of these addictions that can be hidden until you get to know the person much better.  In fact, this is the main problem when you get involved with someone that has an addiction. Many of them aren’t immediately evident so you think you’re getting a real catch until the symptoms start exhibiting themselves.

My Banner

When you’re already in love with someone by the time you realize that he has an issue, it’s more difficult to withdraw from the relationship. Unless the person becomes hurtful and abusive, it may be almost impossible to find the strength to leave a situation that’s not the best for you. Of course, everything is different if your partner is willing and determined to seek the help he needs in order to kick his addiction. In that case, it makes all kinds of sense to stick it out with your partner to provide the much needed support that can, sometimes, help facilitate the treatment.

On the other hand, if your partner doesn’t acknowledge that he has a problem, let alone agree to seek treatment for it, you may need to make a difficult decision. It’s harmful to you if you stay in a situation of this type with no hope for it to improve. No matter how much you may love someone, if he has an addiction and refuses to admit it and seek help for it, you’ll only drag yourself down, too, if you decide to remain. Should you decide to leave, there’s no need to feel guilty because you’ll leave knowing that you did all you could do.

My Banner

Now, in the event that the signs of an addiction were evident from the first meeting you had with this person, and you still allowed yourself to become involved with him, then shame on you! Why would you do something like that to yourself? This is definitely a “What were you thinking?” moment. It’s one thing to have the situation sneak up on you. It’s an entirely different one to go into it with your eyes wide open.
Now, if you’re in a relationship with someone that’s showing some definite signs of a serious addiction, all you can really do is try to convince him to get the help that he probably so desperately needs. In the meantime, you can also do something for yourself. There are some support groups formed specifically for the loved ones of people with addictions. Examples of these are Al-Anon and Nar-Anon. If you’ve made the decision to stay in this relationship, it’s vital that you contact a support group that can help you deal with the situation.

If you decide that you need to leave the relationship, do so when you’ll feel less threatened or less prone to being manipulated. You can help someone you love only so much. Then you must take care of yourself.

If you are in pain and confused?
Here’s some good news…

I have been a military brat…or in the military for a majority of my life. In fact I joined the US Navy when I was a ripe old 17 years of age. Because of my life long military experience I’ve had dozens of homes…in 11countries… and lived long term in 5 states in the U.S.
And because I have lived in so many places and changed schools so often as a kid…I had to learn…and learn REALLY FAST…how to get along with people. And people from ALL WALKS OF LIFE. I can sit down and have some sake with my friend in Tokyo…or pop open a can of suds and fish Lake Dardanelle with an Arkansas “redneck” buddy of mine…makes no difference…
More importantly…I became really good at reading people, understanding what makes them “tick” and even got to a point where I could influence their behavior and actions.
In fact, I got quite good at doing this, so good in fact that I was the “go to” guy whenever my friends had just about any kind of “people problem”…I kind of felt like the male version of “Dear Abby”…
Maybe you even know someone a little like me?…someone that you go to when you have “people problems”…
Anyway…I got a ton of practice keeping relationships together…and putting them back together after they had come apart…because the divorce rate for military couples is MUCH HIGHER than average.

WARNING: Unconventional Methods!

At this point, I must WARN YOU…STRONGLY WARN YOU…my advice and methods are VERY unconventional. I get relationship counselors and the like REALLY ANGRY because they are charging $50 to $100 an hour (sometimes for months and even years) and I can whisper just one of my methods in my friends ear…he DOES IT… And next thing you know… he’s back home, laying back on the couch and watching HOUSE with his fiance on Monday nights.
Now you are free to make up your own mind about me. I just don’t believe that any amount of sitting in a classroom can make up for the REAL WORLD experience that I have under my belt…
I mean, what’s a more valuable experience?…Listening to a lecture on libido? Or BEING THERE when my buddy’s girlfriend is chucking his clothes and skivvies out the bedroom window because she thinks he was with some tart the night before?
I don’t know about you, my money is on the guy with the real world experience any day.
Now, if you are hanging out with me here today, I am guessing you have “relationship troubles” too? If you do…I think I can help…

Here’s how I can help you…

If you have broken up and want to get your guy or gal back, obviously I can’t talk too or be with everyone, I just don’t have enough time…but I have done what I believe to be the next best thing…
I have put my years of experience…into a really easy to follow… love recipe for”getting back together”…and again I forewarn you right now…these are techniques and strategies that are NOT conventional wisdom…and I doubt you have ever read or heard these techniques before.
…and I’ll tell you…

this stuff works!…maybe too well?

Frankly, I get a little freaked out about just how well it works…and worry that it may be used for less than honorable intentions. I mean I want to help GOOD people…I don’t want to help JERKS get girls back that would be better off without them. I do NOT want to help “psycho chick” steal away a married man.
Like a knife, these techniques and principles can be used for great good or grave harm.
