Learning to Rebuild Broken Trust

Its important to realize something about rebuilding trust; you can never fix or change another person. Also, its impossible to make them feel a particular way towards you or force them to agree with your point of view.

Many times, they are going through issues in their life that have nothing at all to do with you personally. Patience is key if youre serious about reconnecting and rebuilding trust.

The first thing to consider is why the trust was broken in the first place so you can prevent it from happening in the future. Consider the following steps to put things right and regain your loved ones trust.

- Sincerely Apologize
Offering a sincere apology is step one after a wrongdoing and it must be genuine and heartfelt in order to be effective.

- Quietly Listen
Many times the best course of action to take is to just sit quietly, close your mouth, and simply listen to the other person. This lets them know you truly care what they have to say as well as value their feelings and opinions.

- Keep Your Promises
Try to never make a promise you dont intend to keep. Breaking promises time after time puts you in a bad and untrustworthy light, as someone who cant be trusted.

- Openly Communicate
Always speak from the heart and say what you mean. Every strong relationship maintains open communication at its core.

- Empathize
Try to put yourself in the other persons shoes and see things from their viewpoint. This will help you to better understand their feelings in addition to making it easier to forgive them of any offenses they may have made against you. Also, empathy is a key tool in rebuilding trust with another person.

- Establish Dependability and Consistency
If you remain consistent in your actions and establish a sense of dependability along the way, the other person will find it much easier to trust you.

Learn to Forgive

What if you were the person on the receiving end of the distrust and the other party is striving to regain your trust? Betrayal isnt easy to overcome and can be very painful.
Forgiveness doesnt come easy, nor does trust in the case of betrayal. However, with a little bit of work and an open heart and mind, it can be achieved.

If you find yourself in a position where a person you love has lost your trust and they wish to regain it, that decision is indeed entirely yours. However, once you make that decision its imperative you stick by it since its going to take a lot of work on both parties to set things right again. Here are a few guidelines on how to make that happen.

- Leave the Past Behind
If you truly mean it when you say you forgive someone, throwing past events back in their face is totally unfair and also hinders any progress the two of you have to reconcile. The past is gone and you cant change it - let it go and start fresh.

- Dont Use Threats
Dont threaten someone in an attempt to control their behavior in order to meet your needs and desires. This never works and will only backfire in time.

- Reaffirm Your Commitment to One Another
Upon overcoming and forgiving the event that led to the broken trust, reaffirm one anothers commitment to rebuilding your relationship even stronger. This is crucial for both parties to agree on to be successful.

Lastly, try to be as patient as possible. Rebuilding trust doesnt happen overnight. Allow the other person enough time to show you they can be trustworthy again.
